Miles Richard Hansen

Our baby boy is here! Miles Richard Hansen was born at 12:23am on Sunday, July 22nd. He weighed 8 lbs 9 oz and was 20.5 inches tall.

I was ten days over due and was induced early Sunday morning. By the evening things were rolling along and I thought I'd be seeing my little boy any minute. I had an epidural and I was feeling great. They decided to break my water and that's when things got pretty scary. With each contraction Miles' heart rate dipped really low. Everyone rushed in as they put oxygen on me and had me roll on each side, hoping his heart rate would increase with a change in position. It didn't. At one point they asked if I could get on my hands and needs and I said yes and flipped right over. As I told my BFF about this she asked if that was hard to do with my epidural. I hadn't really thought about it, but before that moment I could barely lift what felt like thousand pound legs, but if they told me a quick sprint around the floor would have brought his heart rate up, I could have done it.

With each contraction I would listen to his struggling heart, praying it would come back, and when the contraction ended it would. But one time it didn't. People were rushing around me, unplugging machines, and alarms were going off, but all I could hear was the silence of the heart monitor. Landon leaned over me and gave me a blessing - at amen, his heart was back.  Heaven felt so near. They rushed me to the OR for a stat c-section. They had a hard time getting him out because of his position and how the cord was wrapped around his neck. They had to use a vacuum on his head :( Landon was by my side the entire time. When they pulled Miles out Landon was so cute, 'That's him Maeg! Do you hear him!?' That moment was the best feeling I've ever had in my entire life. I couldn't control my tears and I was just so overwhelmed with love! Landon went to grab him and brought him right back to me. We sat there together staring at him as they stitched me up. Landon was not obedient to the curtain we were behind - he watched them pull Miles out and kept peeking over to see them stitch me up. The anesthesiologist finally told him to follow the rules or he'd have to leave, haha. What do you expect from a medical student and excited father?

I also have to add, MY MOM ROCKS! The days leading up to Miles birth she cleaned my apartment, nearly packed the whole thing, bought me baby stuff I still needed, finished all my unfinished crafts (and there were a lot), took me out to dinner, and did lots of walking with me. Even though at times we were just dying to have Miles come, I am so grateful for the time I spent with just her. She was by my side all though labor, rubbing my back and feet and encouraging me along the way. Just before they rushed me to the OR she helped me to calm down and know that everything was okay. I love her. She also took Miles from me on occasion and made me sleep :) I miss her so much now.

Also, my dear friend Alli was an important part of Miles' birth. She was with me all evening and stayed with me until about 4am in the recovery room, even though she had work early that morning. She is one of those people that is just so full of light and happiness and feels good to be around. I'm grateful she was there. And photo credit to her!

The last two weeks have been the happiest of my entire life. Being a mom is so fun! And watching Landon be a dad might be even more fun. He is amazing. Here are a few photos of the big day.

Prego Pictures

I wasn't planning on taking prego pics, but I was talked into it, and I'm glad I did. My friend Anna is having a baby girl about the same time as me, so we took pictures of each other.  4 more days til my little guy is suppose to arrive!

Puerto Rico

When I have a flight, I try to sit as close to the front desk as possible, just in case they say they need someone to give up their seat for a flight voucher. I've sprinted to the counter many times, but on the way home from Thanksgiving last year was the first time they needed my seat.  Landon left me in ATL because he had to get to the hospital. I missed the first half of a final---but there are more important things in life :)

So one day I decided Landon and I should go to Puerto Rico for his spring break with my voucher. I bought our flights and forwarded the confirmation to his email. He was pleasantly surprised.

We called the trip a babymoon, but I think that implies that we are having one last hoorah before the baby comes and we are trapped in our apartment forever--which I do not foresee happening.

Here are some pictures and maybe a few stories...

We rented a girls apartment on the eastern side of the island in the hopes that we could get away from the super touristy areas and for the most part it worked! Check out this parking spot.

See how there is no one on this beautiful beach? Well it's kind of an interesting story. We lined up 2 hours early to take a 1 hour ferry ride to the island of Culebra. So did a LOT of other people. When it appeared as though we wouldn't be making the cut. The security man running the line told me to go to the front because I'm pregnant. woot woot. After getting our tickets he sent us ahead of all of the other people to a very short line to get on the ferry which I learned was for senior citizens, people with handicaps, people with infants, and pregnant women. It was awesome. They loaded our line first on a huge cargo ferry, then the captain said the seas were too rough and we needed to leave right then. We thought we scored--until 10 minutes into the trip they started distributing barf bags to everyone. Yeah, you could say the seas were pretty rough. That crowd was the saddest sight I'd ever seen. I was dying, but all I could do was pray for the puking parents, holding their puking infants and thank the Lord that mine was safely inside me at the moment. Moral of the story - we had one of the most beautiful beaches in the world all to ourselves. And the ride back was pretty nice :)

Hiking at El Yunque National Forest.

he is such a model. not even trying.

The last two days we headed back to Old San Juan and visited some historic sites like Castillo de San Crisobal. We were the first people to arrive at this lovely historic site so we got to roam around freely and do all sorts of weird stuff - as featured in the photo below. The ticket man said it was 'national parks week' and we got in free. Score.

I may have had a bit too much salty food and walking in a short amount of time. Time to put these babies up.

Overall, I'd say Puerto Rico is a pretty lovely place!

Baby Shower Week

This week was a lot of things - last day of grad school, finals week, goodbye at internship, speaking at a baptism, but most of all, it was a baby shower week. Two for me and throwing one for my friend Anna.

Surprise shower at work!

Decorating onsies for activity days.

"Sister Hansen, what is your biggest fear about having a baby?"

(Minus the top 3 fears because they are all too graphic for 8 year olds)

"Probably that he will have has much energy as you guys." (for reals, but I love these girls)

And then I helped throw a shower for my friend Anna who is having a baby girl within about a week of me!

my first time attempting to decorate a cake :/

She is the cutest.

*Sometimes I put my hair in a bun before I get in the shower, then I decide it's good enough for the day. I know, it's not.
